Are you giving back to the community?
As an entertainer/artist I like I am sure many of you get requests all of the time to donate our work or time to help out certain organizations. Depending on where you are in your career or business accepting those invitations may be helpful in promoting yourself in your field of expertise. That being said however, it can also diminish the value of your work and yourself. You may also be starting down a road that you can’t turn off of at a later date. I have been down that road and had to make some steep choices in who I was going to help. For a person like myself that could be very hard as I enjoy helping people, but there has to be some sort organization to your methods.
In the beginning of my career I accepted many invitations to help other organizations and it did help as from a promotional standpoint, but the list kept growing making it difficult to keep up with the demand and it was starting to affect the bottom line of my business. So I had to make some decisions for myself so I did not feel guilty saying no to some and yes to others. I used to feel guilty every time I said no.
So what I did was to pick a certain amount of charities that were close to my heart each year and work with those ones only and turn down the rest. How did I do this? First my wife and I decided on three to four charities that we felt a real bond to helping. Now to clarify I am not talking about disaster relief efforts here, those we help based on funds available at the time, I am talking about the causes that are around year after year that always need help like cancer and so on. Some charities are a time donation, and others require a monetary investment. This way when you turn down other charities, you just say you are working with all of your chosen charities for the year. It makes it a bit easier to say no and also gives you some control on where your money and time goes in order to help others. I understand that everyone needs a hand, but you won’t be able to help everyone so it is best to help those causes that are close to your heart.
