Security Swan-By Bruce Outridge

If you don’t think that swans are territorial then you need to read further. While visiting family in South Western Ontario a friend of the family came over to show us his newly acquired Seadoo. All the homes in this quaint community back onto the river and lake so all have boats, and other water toys. We quickly found out that one species is the true owner of the lake, a mute swan. Now we live in an area where geese, swans, ducks, and other water birds live together in harmony so you can imagine how surprised I was to see this swan protecting and attacking other birds and particularly riders of Seadoos. It has gotten so bad that there are no geese or other water birds in the waters near this swan, he has chased them all away. The reason for this is unknown other than many of the motorized water toys have been moving around this swan and apparently he has had enough. Stories from the neighbourhood say people have been terrorized by the swan and have been forced to hide to escape the fierce swan. It was amazing to watch this swan circle his victim, intimidate, and attack when ready. I learn something everyday and apparently swans have personality, and not always a good one. Check out the video trailer I created and see it for yourself.
