I love music, in fact I enjoy it so much I am now sorry I didn’t continue my start as a drummer in my youth. As an entertainer however music can be both friend and foe. A little background music at an event is great and a nice addition to the atmosphere of an event. When the music gets cranked up however you now turn the music into the enemy of an entertainer.
As a caricature artist part of our entertainment factor is to talk with the guests we are drawing. If we don’t talk the guest they sit there looking bored and you lose that entertainment benefit. When I talk to people about what they liked best about a caricature artist many times it is the fact that they were engaging and kept the guests entertained. It is also important for the artist to clearly hear the persons name and it’s spelling, details they may be requesting for the picture, and answers to basic conversation.
If you have disc jockey or other form of musical entertainment for your event try not to have the two go on at the same time. Remember that the disc jockey is there to play the music loud and get people dancing, that’s their job. Our job however is to talk with people and that is very hard to do over loud music. You pay a lot for your entertainment and it is important that your guests get the value from choices. Don’t water down both with bad planning. Maximize the benefit from each entertainer and you will have a party that is remembered for a long time to come.
