People are looking for all types of entertainment for events and caricatures are a popular choice due to the fact they can be appropriate for all ages at any type of event. Most of the requests are the normal events that you see every day such as birthday parties, weddings, corporate events, bar mitzvahs, and these are usually very enjoyable events. The events can range from common to strange like the time I was asked to draw at a swingers party ( unfortunately I was out of town for that one), but it was the call I got from an event planner that had me worried about a gig I did this summer.

I got the call to do caricatures at a location in Toronto Ontario. When I looked at the booking information the location was a funeral home. Now this was certainly a strange place to have caricatures drawn. I couldn’t picture myself drawing at a funeral, even though I have heard people try to make these events a celebration instead of a somber event, but I still had a hard time seeing it. When I arrived at the event the front of the building looked closed up and I thought okay this is not making any sense. I walked around the back of the building to find the garage part was filled with people, a barbecue, popcorn, balloonist, and more. Was I relieved to learn I wasn’t going to be drawing people in coffins or at a funeral itself. It turns out that this funeral home which is quite large holds a community event each year. It just goes to show you that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
