When Your Career Talents Collide

Do you do different things in your business or career? I know I certainly do and over the years it has been a point of conversation and contention. I have been criticized for not focusing on one thing something every business owner hears from the gurus of their industry. Although I know that focus is the goal I have not been able to do one thing and many times it has been a saving for us income wise. In fact for many years we would hide certain services from one industry to another. This happened when one truck driver said I couldn’t possibly know what I am talking about after I wrote an article on the trucking industry because I am a caricature artist.

We are now in a part of our life and business where we don’t care what people think. We have three divisions of our business including an art business, media business, and translation business. They used to operate in a silo from each other with their own customer base but now have begun crossing paths on many fronts. Our media clients use our translation services and our art services.

This happened the other night when I was hired to draw caricatures for a transport company to celebrate their awards night. I originally drew the Human Resources Manager for the company while drawing and displaying at a major truck show in our area. The truck show hired me to draw on the Saturday and the other days I offer media services at our booth for the trucking industry. The Human Resources Manager then hired me to draw for their event. It is fun doing events where you have a common connection with the guests as it makes for some fun conversations.

If you have a business that offers various services. Learn how to divide them into either different services or divisions. This is important from a marketing standpoint but don’t be afraid to let people know you do other things. We have found now that people respect our many talents and we’ve become a go to for various services. We work hard but it’s lots of fun. ‘Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life!”
