Recently one of my caricatures went for a large amount at a silent auction for a good cause at an event. The money was for a foundation helping families of the Humboldt Truck / Bus accident that has changed the trucking industry and how it operates. I was covering the event for my media business and donated a caricature of a hockey player with a truck going between his legs.
Now I was really worried about giving the caricature to the event. This was a very serious accident and I was worried the caricature would look like I was making fun of the tragedy. I titled it “Be The Change” as when someone looked at it they would be reminded that we all need to do our part to make things better in the trucking industry. I have a media company in the trucking industry so am very well aware of the issues around the tragedy.

This picture represents a point in time in which the trucking industry was forced to make a change. Illustrated by Bruce Outridge whom is also in the trucking industry with a media company, the Humboldt crash has forced many changes in the trucking industry with training standards and continues to do so. The Humboldt crash to this day remains a reminder to the transportation industry that change is not only needed, but required. We cannot let the lives of the people affected in this crash go without purpose. Every time you look at this picture use it as a reminder that each one of us has to “Be The Change”!
All the gifts had to have a minimum value of $100. I charge $200 for an item like this so valued it for that. Apparently it went well over that.
Scott Thomas is the Father of one of the players killed in the crash and the one I was most worried about misunderstanding the picture. He was very touched and a copy was sent to him as a gift. I am glad the picture went over so well.
