When you’re drawing caricatures for a live event you have to work with confidence not fear and that is not easy to do. People watch a caricature artist draw with no pencil sketch, pre-outline, or use of an eraser and are amazed every time. One of the biggest comments I get at events is, “You’re using just a marker?” Like anything the more you do it the better and more confident you become. For many professional caricaturists we have a system for starting a drawing and the sketch is done in our heads just not on paper. Someone watching us just sees a lIne added here or a stroke entered there and doesn’t realize we already have the idea in our brain.
My Granddaughter found this out this Summer as she accompanied me to an event. She is getting ready for high school in September and wanted to earn her volunteer hours before she started. She is a creative person interested in video, photography, and visual art. Boy did she pick the right company, I have been dragging her to truck shows, outdoor party events as my assistant, and she has been knocking it out of the park. She wants to be a caricaturist and has been watching and learning how live caricature entertainment works. We were at an event that was slow so I asked if she wanted to draw a caricature of me. To say, “Lack of confidence” would be an understatement but she gave it a try. You can see how it turned out in the video below.
She is an amazing artist already so it is just practice and time for her confidence to build. I guess the lesson here is if you want to get good at something whether it is drawing or not you need to give it time and keep working at it knowing you will get better. Even after 20 years drawing live I am still trying to improve and get better everyday. You know when you’ve crossed over to that professional level when you have the confidence to start and even make a mistake, but don’t let the fear hold you back.
