What goes into a piece of art? Art whether it be visual arts, music, acting, or writing all are more than just a final product. They are years of dedication, trial and error, failures, successes, and possibly sales. It encompasses frustration from failing to getting something right and practicing until it is perfect in the eyes of the artist. This comes with years of study, tears, happiness, and defeat. When you buy a piece of art you are buying many moments of an artist’s life. You are a part of the journey of that artist and getting a true piece of art, something that has taken years to perfect.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around for a lot longer than many of us realize. It has been helping musicians sound perfect for years, given artists unlimited brushes in a digital paint program, and filled in for bands when they didn’t have a drummer. I had friends that had a machine that when the two played on stage with a guitar and a keyboard they sounded like the Beach Boys in perfect harmony. So is artificial intelligence bad, no it’s been part of our lives for a long time in various forms. So what’s different now?

The difference between prior versions of artificial intelligence and what’s out now is that it has been used as part of the process before and it is now being used to create a finished product. Even more important is the way it creates that finished product. Artificial Intelligence scrapes the internet and uses the hard work of artists and creates that work in seconds. It’s basically stealing. Many of my cartoon friends have been frustrated with the amount of fake caricatures floating around and with my internet radio station I have been sent many songs that are AI created.
What’s the point of this article? We all use artificial intelligence in one way or another and it is okay if used for process. If it is used to help inspire or for medial tasks. If using it as a final piece of art I believe it steals from those that have taken the time to learn their craft. Every artist has dedicated countless hours of learning, training, and perfecting to get good at what they do. Support artists that have taken the time to get to where they are, they have put in the time. Thanks for reading my opinion, let me know what you think.
One last thing, AI art does not have copyright attached to it, you’ll never own it.
