At a recent Career Coaches Event students challenged me to draw a caricature of a student. This was not planned, but sure gained a lot of attention at the event.
I have been working with students for a decade. It started with my former television show Inspiring Youth TV which was a show where I would interview young people in the area about careers and businesses. When our local business chamber asked local businesses to visit grade nine and ten students to talk about their careers I signed up. It’s meant to give students and idea on what they might want to pursue.
How did I get challenged?
This was group three of a dozen students that I had been talking to over the time at Notre Dame High School. The well organized event was one of the best I had done over the last year. The students were energetic and respectful and weren’t afraid to ask hard questions. As I do many things the conversation often goes in different directions and somehow it got to my caricature business. One student asked, “How long does it take to draw a caricature and could you draw one?” Since I had a whiteboard I was given a marker and the challenge was on. I asked for a volunteer and a student put up their hand. I went into caricature entertainment mode out of habit and the group got engaged which eventually attracted cameras and other students to watch.
It was a lot of fun and the students were amazed. It took two minutes to draw the caricature. In fact the organizer of the event asked me afterwards, “What was going on at your presentation?” I told him I was challenged to draw and the challenge was accepted, he didn’t realize I was a cartoonist. Thank you to Notre Dame High School and HIEC for having me out to the event.
