Once a year or so I get a book cover project from a new author with a dream of success through the pages. It can be a very exciting time for a new author seeing your thoughts and dreams come to life, I know I have written six books over my time ranging from comic books to self help books. In the past I have been part of illustrator associations providing illustration services to authors and much more.
When I get the call however I usually ask the same question, “Are you self publishing the book or publishing through a traditional publisher?” This is an important question as the author hiring an illustrator might be a total waste of time. Many publishers have their own illustration and design teams that they prefer to use. Recently I was hired by a local author for her book cover and she wanted a female donkey for the cover dressed in a variety of specific items.
Over the years I have done a number of book covers and they are usually a fun project. Knowing the elements that go into a book cover and the basic design principles required. This allows the illustration to work with the cover as a whole.
