Schools back and this caricaturist feels like I was back in school as well! As school returns the Universities all have orientation weeks. This turns into one long party at the end of the week to get the students comfortable with their surroundings. I was hired by two different Universities to draw caricatures of the students at outside events for Orientation Week. The first week of school at University has the students in classes during the day showing them around and getting comfortable with their surroundings. For many it’s their first time away from home so it can be a little scary so they hold opportunities to get them to network with each other and make friends. At night the events are all party with items like rock climbing, caricatures, karaoke, free food, and concerts.
The fun part is talking to students about where they come from and how they met. Many knew someone before getting to the campus so it was good to see a familiar face. Others were scared and were still struggling to meet people, but I am confident they will get there. The senior students dress up and walk around to liven up the party. At Waterloo University the students would encourage people on the spot to yell the school chant, “ WE ARE WHAT-WATERLOO” our something to the that affect, with all the noise I couldn’t make it out. At Western University it was a dance called The Wobble. It happened in my caricature line when a group would break out into a giant line dance on the spot. I am told it is a prerequisite to know this dance upon arriving at the university.
Although the weeks look like fun some students did start their classes. While drawing at Western some students had Calculus classes at 7PM at night. Others had science in the morning at 8AM. I felt like a parent warning them to pace themselves but hey their adults now, they’ll figure it out. Thank you to Waterloo University and Western University for having me out to draw for your Orientation Weeks and I wish all the students success in your courses for the future.
