The Rat Pack-Cartoon of the Week

The Rat Pack by Bruce Outridge

The Story Behind the Cartoon

This caricature was done years ago after watching a movie about The Rat Pack. You may be too young to know who they are but they were great singers and I just loved their music and sense of humour from the day. This caricature was done in Pen & Ink with the original being 18×24 in size. I still have the original framed in my office to this day and it is still one of my favourites. I have found in life certain pieces of art created throughout my career have become inspirational milestones. Do you have the same feeling about your art?

Caricaturing the Burlington Force Basketball Team-Cartoon of the Week

Burlington Force Group Caricature

The Story Behind the Cartoon

As a caricature artist you get all kinds of requests. Often I will be given a picture of a team and then asked to create a team picture. To me making a picture that represents the picture given to me seems redundant. I normally suggest we put the players in a practice situation to add some energy in the picture. Although this was an in depth caricature with all the people it was still fun to do. The Burlington Force is a basketball team in the minor leagues. Of course you new that. Enjoy!

Load Surfer Cartoon-Cartoon of the Week

LS-Kapuni-Newspaper-adThe Story Behind the Cartoon

It is funny what you will find when backing up your files. This company isn’t in business anymore but for years I worked with them on various illustration projects and advertisements. They wanted a surf beaver as a mascot for ads and then they would have me create comic strips around them for magazine advertisements. They were always fun projects and paid well, too bad they dissolved and everyone moved on. This company was in the trucking industry and used to match freight with trucking companies.

Garfield Inspired Artist-Cartoon of the Week

Garfield-bruce's-earlier-art

The Story Behind the Cartoon

As mentioned in an earlier post I have been inspired by cartoons from an early age. Marvin and Garfield were cartoons that I used to copy from my Dad’s newspaper when learning to draw. This cartoon of Garfield was drawn when I was about 13 years of age. As you can see I developed my signature for my art back then and still use it to this day. Thank you Jim Davis for helping me in my career path to being a cartoonist.

The Cancer Convoy-Cartoon of the Week

The Story Behind the Cartoon

Since the folks at Trucking for a Cure are having their convoy in Woodstock Ontario this weekend I thought this cartoon would be appropriate. I completed this illustration for the group years ago for a convoy showing some of the participants that played a major role in those early years. If you get a chance to get out and participate then it is a great way to get the family involved. Here is a link to the convoy for more information. www.truckingforacure.com

A career influenced by Marvin-Cartoon of the Week

The Story Behind the Cartoon

If you look back on your career it is interesting to see how those early influences have played apart in life. One of my favourite cartoons from the age of around 12 was Marvin by Tom Armstrong. The strip is still available to this day and I used to copy the cartoons out of the paper. Here is one scene from a strip that I copied at the age of thirteen or so. This was how I learned to draw. Thank you to Tom Armstrong and many other great artists for playing a part in my career to this day. Enjoy!

The License-Cartoon of the Week

License-cartoon by Bruce Outridge

The Story Behind the Cartoon

This cartoon came from a joke I heard over the radio one day from the DJ at the time who would read a joke each morning. I believe I was in Timmins or somewhere driving my truck when it came over and at my next stop I jotted the idea down on my note pad. Years later it became a cartoon. Sorry I couldn’t give credit to the person that told me the joke, but it is funny. Moral of the story never let kids play in your purse. Enjoy!

The Interview-Cartoon of the Week

Media cartoon

The Story Behind the Cartoon

As someone who is not only an artist but entrepreneur with podcasts and now a television show I have interviewed hundreds of people. Some people get nervous as soon as the camera is rolling or the microphone is on. People prepare for the deep in-depth questions but very often mess up on the basics like their name. With that in mind this cartoon was born. Enjoy!
